Tisens is a sunny high plateau surrounded by mountains and castles, set among apple orchards, chestnut groves and woods. Nobles and counts once spent their holidays here; today you set off from our hotel on trips with a medieval air – and Meran and Bozen are still close.
On foot: Prissian and St. Hippolyt
Prissian is just a 20-minute walk from us. Here you will find Castel Katzenzungen, built in 1244, the Zwingenburg, the Wehrburg and the Casatsch ruin (Pfeffersburg), with a wide view into the Adige Valley.
The hill of St. Hippolyt near Naraun is within walking distance too: about 50 minutes, with loungers to rest on and a view as far as the Dolomites.
Mountain villages: Grissian and Gfrill
- Grissian lies at 800 metres. Its 13th-century church of St. Jakob shows the first depiction of the Dolomites, along with frescoes of the Marienberg school.
- Gfrill lies about 4 km above Tisens at 1,050 metres. Worth seeing are the church of St. Nikolaus and, for families, the Rainguthof animal farm with dwarf goats, sheep, woolly pigs and donkeys.
Into town: Lana and Meran
Lana is a 15-minute drive away. Walk along the irrigation channel path to the waterfall and browse its boutiques, bars and cafés; Lana's golf club lies among apple orchards and vineyards.
The spa town of Meran is about 20 minutes away by car. Stroll under the arcades, treat yourself to a coffee and visit the gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle, with more than 80 garden landscapes.
